Evocare, non descrivere
Guardando attraverso l’obiettivo senza autofocus, mantenendo intenzionalmente i soggetti fuori fuoco, mi sono reso conto che le immagini ottenute sprigionavano un potere evocativo di gran lunga superiore rispetto alle stesse inquadrature nitide, nelle quali l’aspetto puramente descrittivo rimaneva predominante.
Affascinato da questa intuizione, ho deciso di applicarla ogni volta che desideravo cogliere la poesia di certe atmosfere, anziché limitarmi a documentare un ambiente o un oggetto. Un risultato analogo lo ottengo sperimentando con il movimento intenzionale della fotocamera, una tecnica che elimina la definizione rigida e il blocco istantaneo della visione.
Venezia sembra una città facile da fotografare, ma l’inganno è dietro l’angolo: il risultato rischia quasi sempre di trasformarsi in una cartolina turistica. Come fare, allora, a catturarne le atmosfere più intime e caratteristiche senza cadere nell’ovvio?
L’uso combinato di queste due tecniche mi è venuto in aiuto, permettendomi di cogliere le vibrazioni più profonde della Serenissima. Sono sensazioni legate intimamente a chi vive la città, frammenti visivi capaci di restituire le atmosfere uniche e senza tempo che solo Venezia sa proporre.
To Evoke, Not to Describe
Looking through the lens without autofocus, intentionally keeping the subjects out of focus, I realized that the resulting images possessed a far greater evocative power than the same sharp frames, where the purely descriptive aspect remained predominant.
Fascinated by this intuition, I decided to apply it whenever I wished to capture the poetry of certain atmospheres, rather than merely documenting a setting or an object. I achieve a similar result by experimenting with intentional camera movement—a technique that eliminates rigid definition and the instant freezing of a vision.
Venice seems like an easy city to photograph, but the deception is always just around the corner: the result almost always risks turning into a tourist postcard. How, then, can one capture its most intimate and characteristic atmospheres without falling into the obvious?
The combined use of these two techniques came to my aid, allowing me to capture the deepest vibrations of the Serenissima. These sensations are intimately linked to those who truly experience the city, visual fragments capable of restoring the unique, timeless atmospheres that only Venice can offer.
